On December 16, 1944 three German armies launch a surprise attack through the Ardennes forest located between Luxembourg and Belgium. The German plan was to thrust to the port of Antwerp and cut off the British and Canadians forces thus causing a second"Dunkirk". Initially, the Germans made considerable ground and inflicted heavy casualties on U.S. troops. Once the American Air Force was able to take to the sky's again, they pounded German supply lines. Together with Allied reinforcements arriving, the offensive came to a halt. The American soldier really distinguished himself during this battle against overwhelming enemy forces and sealed the Third Reich's eventual collapse. |

On the morning of December 16, 1944, two thousand German guns opened up on unsuspecting American soldiers. Most thought the war might soon be over and Germany's defeat right around the corner. Yet, this new German offensive proved that Germany was far from defeated. Crack German paratroopers and units of the Waffen SS initially cut through Allied positions with heavy casualties inflicted on both sides. Eventually, with Allied reinforcements mounting and a supply line being hammered by the U.S Air Force, the Germans were ground to a halt. Forced to retreat back to the German frontier and leaving behind their shattered hopes of a German victory over the Allies. |
